You Do Not Need to Attune to, or Align with, your Soul.
You do not need to attune to yourself or align with your soul. You already are yourself. You are your soul every second of every day, in every choice, every thought, every action. Your soul is your entire path of life. Your entire life is your soul: searching, expressing, learning.
The idea that you are separate from it and need to get back to it, find it, become more it somehow is so entirely false. It’s a trick of perception. It’s a reduction of language. And it is spiritual manipulation and abuse—wielded by you or anyone else.
I am guilty of it. I use the words “attune” and “align” to describe my experience, my process and my work. But it is false. I literally use sacred sound as a vibrational tuning fork—and it is still false.
I get stuck in this “I need to know more” place, usually in the form of a “I need to know what to do differently” thought-pattern that goes like this: What can I do differently that will spark a change—a lasting one—that pops me out of the groove of this old pattern? {Mind draws blank.} What do I need to do? What do I need to do? What do I need to do? {Mind still blank.} I must not be attuned…devoted…surrendered enough.
Really? How incredibly spiritually self-abuse. After 17 years of spiritual practice (and a lifetime of journaling), I don’t know myself? What utter bullshit. It is manufactured, false confusion that keeps me from the power of who I really am, what I already fucking know. (Vata constitution people, we manufacture false confusion like you would not believe. It’s kind of like a creative genius, quick-as-the-wind intellect by-product.)
But into that moment of manufactured, false confusion can interject all kinds of saviors and salespeople. Suddenly, I’m not just a failure in the one endeavor that sparked the What can I do differently inquiry; I’m a spiritual failure too. I’ve always found that underlying insinuation manipulative in soul-alignment equals material wealth messaging. (And I do not want to perpetuate that.)
I was having one of these how can I be more attuned moments yesterday about the evolution and growth of my work here. I’d been painting and had just changed out of my paint clothes. There is a mirror on the back of my bedroom door. I reached for the door to reveal myself in the mirror, and before I even came into view, I thought: Me painting is me, truly, naturally. There is no alignment to make. That is my soul. I don’t need to work for that.
It is not that you need to know yourself. You don’t need to work for that. You know yourself. You know your soul. Deeply. Intimately. Perfectly.
You do not need to attune to it, or align with it. It is you, and you are it.
What you might be longing to do is cleave yourself to the certainty of that knowing. Release what is not you. Stand in yourself and drop the cloaks of false identity from your shoulders.
That is, in my experience, what we mean when we say soul-attuned or soul-aligned: soul bare, stripped of the sheaths in which culture and family and karma have shroud us.
That is the path we walk. We bring into awareness all that is not us, and we slough it off. We say thank you for the teaching, thank you for the wisdom you’ve forged in me—and we release it into the river.
Through that we deepen trust that the ground under our feet is of our own making, that we know the terrain by heart, that each of our choices, each of our actions can and does rightfully grow from it.
This does not mean that we do not want a companion to witness when we waver, a teacher to hold us to our highest truth, a fellow sojourner to hear and to know us. We do. We most definitely do. But do not be confused: these are reflectors you choose for yourself; they do not hold the answers. You do.
I am offering a Spring Equinox Energy Attunement between March 13 – 31 to those who received a personal mantra. (The irony of this name is not lost on me; in fact, it birthed this post.) You can request your personal mantra below and join us.
Sacred sound through sanskrit mantra is our tuning fork. And yet, what I’ve found is that, while mantra does tune you to its qualities and can be called attunement in that regard, those qualities already exist, whole, within you.
The mantra rings so loudly, reverberates so strongly, you feel it shake loose everything it and you are not. I’m coming to experience (after a decade of practice) that this is its great power. When you practice, you deepen a trust in the you whom you already know.
Mantra is a tool and the Spring Equinox Energy Attunement is a space to cultivate your discernment, to stand in your trust, to release and to go forward with clear conviction.
That is what I am offering. You do not lack anything. You already know. If I can help you shine that truth, and you’d love to have this experience together, I’d love to have you join us.
